((Note: These details aren't quite concrete yet. But for the most part, they are. You'll be told if they change.))
INTRO:
Welcome, one and all, to an OC comic tournament, hosted graciously by the Durindana Academy for unusually accomplished adolescents.
What exactly is it? Well, let's break it down into simple terms:
You know what a fighting tournament is, right? Many people enter, and pair off one-on-one to fight. The winner of each fight moves on to the next round, and so on until there is a winner. This tournament is much like that, only instead of physical, real-world fights, the battles will take place in comic form. Each contestant will choose one original character (one that they made up themselves) and, by drawing comics, pit them against the oc's of other contestants. For every round, both contestants in each match will draw their version of how the battle would go, with their character coming out on top. The judges of the tournament will decide which comic was better (based on several different factors), and that person is the winner. Thus the winning character 'won' the 'fight' and can continue in the tournament that's taking place in the world of the comics.
(If you do not understand at all at this point, feel free to ask Leucrotta or genaion (dark-lost on deviantArt) to clarify. But for now we must move on to specifics.)
PLOT:
As you may be able to guess, the setting of the tournament is the private island on which the Academy is located. It will take place during the school year, but it shouldn't interfere too much with the academy's functioning, since most of the fights won't be in the school's used buildings. Thus you don't have to be directly involved in the roleplaying part of this forum, though it is encouraged, of course. ;3
But why in the heck is a school sponsoring a fighting tournament? That matter may be up for debate. Basically, the situation is this:
Sylena Meliora, the principal and founder of the academy, has decided to play host to this tournament. She has sent out invitations to those candidates she sees as fit to compete, and she has also had some invitations left out to be found by others. Her reasons are, as stated, unknown, but perhaps during the course of the tournament, all will be revealed...
RUNDOWN:
So, how does one get involved in this? Here's a quick rundown of how this whole thing will work:
First of all, anyone can enter. You don't have to be really talented as an artist. Everyone who enters will get a chance to compete. Just getting that out there. Don't be afraid to try. You might be pleasantly surprised.
Anywho.
The tourney itself will begin on October 31st. Yep. Halloween. It is on that day that the first round match-ups will be decided at random. Until that day, there are three things you must do in order to compete:
1. You must choose a character to compete, and make sure that you have some kind of reference(s) for them, available to the other competitors.
2. You must inform myself or genaion (as dark-lost on deviantArt) that you are going to be competing.
3. You must draw a short comic that details how your character received their invitation and decided to go to the island.
(If you wish to use multiple characters, you can. Just make sure you have refs for all of them, and see the rules section for more details.)
After that, you're all set! Don't worry, the intro comic is NOT an audition. Everyone will be allowed to compete here, regardless of artistic talent.
On Halloween, all the entrants' names will be placed in a hat (or whatever is convenient). Literally. And they will be drawn out at random, two-by-two, to form the first round match-ups. From then, you will have two weeks to make a comic detailing how your character arrives at the island and defeats their first opponent.
Those comics chosen as the best from the first round (one per match-up) will advance to the next round. There will be however many rounds as are necessary to determine one final winner.
JUDGING:
Judging will be carried out by myself, genaion (dark-lost), and possibly several others. We will make ourselves as objective as possible, regardless of relation to the competitors.
The categories we will use to determine the winners will roughly consist of:
Once we have judged each round, we'll do the match-ups for the next one.
BATTLE ROYALE:
Since we are not limiting the number of contestants, there will most likely be a time, or more than one time, when the number of remaining competitors is not even. In the case of this happening, we will pair off everyone, until there is only three left. These three will all be pitted against one another in a 'battle royale'. This means that in your comic for this round, you will have to have your character fighting two opponents instead of one. There will also be only one entry that wins out of the three.
PRIZES:
Probably the most important part. xD;
The only prize that is definite is that the winner will receive two comics of their character facing a 'final boss' character. One comic will be by me, the other will be by genaion (dark-lost).
I know, that's not the biggest, best prize in the world, but the aim of this is to have fun and to be able to say that you won, not to get something. xD
Besides, another prize is somewhat likely to be involved. More info will come if that option is decided on.
CLOSING:
So, does all this make sense? If it doesn't, ask me or genaion to explain it for you.
What you can do from here is read the rules and the introduction if you haven't already.
From then on, go get started! You can use the other board to talk about the tourney with us, or with other competitors.
Good luck to all of you!
