The storm winds outside hastened into a fury, as the last letter fell from pen to the paper. With her words carefully laid out now, the woman named Sylena Meliora returned the pen to her broad oak desk and sat back.
Soon, students would be arriving for the school year here at Durindana Academy, the private school that Sylena herself had paid for. They weren't just any students, of course, but that was a matter for another explanation. In any case, they wouldn't be arriving alone, if all went well.
Smiling with satisfaction, she folded the last invitation and slid it into an envelope. She reached for the candle at her elbow and brought it over the paper, letting a rather large blob of wax fall from it. This she pressed down with her only ring, forming a seal that kept the invitation from prying eyes. She slid the finished envelope into a pile of similar ones, and folded her hands on the desktop.
From the shadows across the room, an even darker shape emerged. That of a large black lion, his eyes the same violet hue as hers. Padding towards her, he bowed his head for her fingers to snake their way into his mane.
"We're almost there..." She whispered softly to the beast. "I'm sure of it."
The next day, the invitations left the island. Some were destined for certain people, deemed worthy competitors. Others were sent with specific instructions that they should be left out in the open for those unknown to find them.
As for who would answer... only time would tell...
